Kennett Square, PA
Located in Chester County, Kennett Square is known as the Mushroom Capital of the world due to extensive mushroom farms producing millions of pounds of mushrooms by the day. In recognition of this fact, the town holds an annual Kennett Mushroom Festival in September with a parade and tours of mushroom farms. Kennett Square is also home to the corporate headquarters for Genesis HealthCare, who administers elderly care. Kennett Square today has a population of roughly 6,000.
Kennett Square was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The area was named “Kennet” after Kennet, England and the “Square” derived from a land grant that was one square mile. Kennett Square was also instrumental during the underground railroad, which helped slaves to the north for freedom.
